Tours, the city of France
Tours is a city located in the central part of France and is the capital of the Indre-et-Loire department. With the population of about 136,000 people Tours is the largest city in the Central France. The city stands upon the Loire River. The city of Tours was known since the Gallic times. In the 1st century A.D. it was captured by the Romans and given the name Caesarodunum. In the Middle Ages near Tours took place the well known battle of Tours when Muslim invaders were stopped on their way in France. During the Middle Ages up to 16th century it was the capital of France and the place where the king’s court was situated. After the moving of the capital to Paris and king’s residence to Versailles the city of Tours began to decline slowly. Tours was reborn in the 19th and 20th centuries at the time of the industrialization and introducing of the railroads. During the First World War Tours hosted American troops that supplied the army with uniforms, built munitions dumps and repaired equipment. During the Second World War Tours was partially destroyed and some historical monuments were lost.
The main landmark of Tours is the cathedral of Tours erected in honor of Saint Gatien its canonized first bishop. The history of that building starts in the 12th century. Among other sights can be pointed out the Jardin botanique de Tours – a botanical garden of Tours, Place Plumereau – medieval houses and others. The whole city is called "Le Jardin de la France" - "The Garden of France" due to its beautiful parks and picturesque area between the rivers. It is also said that in Tours is spoken the purest classic version of the French language.
